Everglades Restoration Begins

The stretch of US41 that connects Naples to Miami is widely considered to be one of the state’s biggest ecological travesties. The Tamiami Trail choked off the River of Grass, severing Shark River Valley & cutting off freshwater flows to the creeks, rivers & lakes that flow into Florida Bay. A 1-mile bridge just east of Miami will allow water to flow south through the Shark River Valley for the first time in nearly a century.

The National Park Service plans calls for 4 more bridges with a total raised distance of 6.5 miles. Total cost will be US$285 million.
